The Homeland Museum is a public cultural institution operating within the Center for Culture Danilovgrad, with the primary mission of preserving, studying, and presenting the cultural and historical heritage of the Danilovgrad region. Through its collections and exhibitions, the museum presents the continuity of life in this area — from prehistory to the modern era.

Our collections

The Homeland Museum is a type of comprehensive museum. The museum holdings consist of items from several collections:

Archaeological collection

Objects from the prehistoric period to the Roman era. Pottery, stone tools, fragments of sarcophagi, and other finds from the Bjelopavlići region.

Historical collection

Weapons, flags, documents, and objects that illustrate the social and historical development of this area through the centuries.

Ethnographic collection

Traditional costumes, tools, household items, and handicrafts that testify to the traditional way of life of the local population.

Numismatic collection

A rich collection of coins — from Roman coins, through medieval dinars, to perpera and more recent examples.

Art collection

Paintings, portraits of important figures, and artworks connected to the Danilovgrad region.

History in numbers

1959

Initiative

An initiative was launched to establish a museum with the aim of systematically collecting, protecting, and processing the cultural and historical material of the Danilovgrad region.

1965

Museum opening

The museum was officially opened to the public in the building that is now the Art Gallery. Work began under modest conditions.

1979

Earthquake

A devastating earthquake temporarily hindered museum activities. A period of reconstruction and adaptation followed.

1988

Opened in the summer residence

The museum was opened in its current location — a beautiful summer residence of Prince Nikola Petrović Njegoš, where it remains today.
